Wheatear travels

IMG_4361 Male Wheatear

Nigel Richards is a regular visitor to Croick and a wonderful cataloguer of our bird and insect life, much on behalf of the British Trust for Ornithology. He spent yesterday on the estate and one of the birds he recorded was the male Wheatear pictured above.

Amazingly he had recorded and tagged this bird before as a chick in 2011. The Wheatear is a migratory bird which travels each winter to sub-Saharan Africa. So this bird has made the journey six time sin total since it was first tagged, and has returned to exactly the same place where it was raised as a chick. The wonders of nature!
