HISTORIC CROICK CHURCH

There are few more poignant sits in the Highlands than Croick Church and its graveyard where local people, cleared from the land to make way for sheep, were forced to find temporary shelter before leaving the strath, mostly to Canada.

A church window records despairing messages scratched in the glass and the church interior remains as it was built in 1842 to the design of the famous architect/engineer Thomas Telford.

See the graffiti firsthand and learn about the impact of the Clearances on the local population.

Echoes of the past

Close by the church are the remains of a Pictish Broch built around the time of Christ and along the length of the strath you will see the remains of settlements where crofting families lived right up until the time of the Clearances.

Regenerative Farming

After years as a large scale and intense sheep farm the current owners have changed the focus of the farming activities using cattle and sheep to help restore the landscape. We call this Regenerative Farming, continuing to help feed the nation but supporting nature not exploiting it.

Captivating wildlife

Our part of Scotland is known not just for moorlands, woodlands, rivers and lochs but for the wildlife you might see in that landscape. Some of the species that make their home in and around Croick include golden eagles, sea eagles, red deer, lapwing, curlew, golden plover, red squirrels, salmon and trout. Come and see what you can spy.
